5 Ways to get your home Organized

Guess what? You’re stuck at home and know that deep down this is the perfect opportunity for you to finally get some areas of your home more organised.

But, let me also guess that even though you know you should do this, you’re still having trouble getting started, right?

If this is you, here are some super easy organising tasks that you can do alone (or with your whole family) that should get you going.

A few small accomplishments may just get you thinking that you can do almost anything when it comes to getting organised. Maybe try doing just one of these per day. It looks like we might be here for a while. Let’s do it.

Clean out the sock drawer
Is the sock drawer a mess? Here’s how to quickly and easily take care of it. First, grab the drawer, take it out, and bring it to your bed. Tip the whole thing out. Then, pair everything up.

Are there any lonely socks in there missing their mate? Those are part of your new cleaning rags.

Second, any holey socks? Be ruthless and say goodbye to those too.

And, finally, are there any that you haven’t worn in months? They will serve a much better purpose worn on your hand as a dust rag.

Now, if you’re still left with way too many socks, be a little ruthless and pare down the amount you have to what will reasonably fit back in the drawer.

Organise your undies drawer
Next, let’s work on your undies. The process is very similar. Anything damaged, over-stretched elastic, or which don’t fit you properly, or which you just haven’t worn in a long time?

All of those should be disposed of. For the rest, fold them neatly and put a reasonable number back.

Under the kitchen sink
I’m referring to the stuff under your kitchen sink! Things tend to collect down there – especially the further back you go. Today’s the day to take everything out from under there.

Give that area a good clean out and then determine which items you still need and which should be sent to the rubbish.

Are you hoarding unnecessary items under the kitchen sink?

Once you’ve settled on a reasonable number of cleaning supplies, find a good plastic bin or an old unused baking tray or plastic bin and store everything in there. That will keep the liquids from spilling over and making a mess.

The great thing about cleaning up this area is that the next time you’re at the store, you won’t buy items that you already have purchased

Pens, pencils and more
Your home office supplies. Do you have that top drawer on a home desk that’s been a collection site for pens, pencils, tapes, staplers and so on? Pull the drawer out and dump it onto an old towel on a benchtop. Now, separate like items into groups.

For the pens and markers, check to see if they still work. If they don’t write on the first try, toss them.

Are the pencils sharp and usable? When putting the items back that you want to keep, it’s great to find some sort of organising help.

Small cardboard boxes cut to size easily hold pens and pencils. Do you have an egg carton lying about? Those little wells are great for clips, pins, staples, elastic bands, and so on.

Clean out what you have and make it easier to hold on to what you really need.

Do the 10-minute tango
Finally, my all-time favourite tip. If you’re really struggling to get started on a big area, do what I call “The 10-Minute Rubbish Bag Tango”.

Give everyone in your home two rubbish bags. Set a timer for 10 minutes and tell each person to run around the home and fill one bag with rubbish and one bag with things which can leave your home and be donated. ONLY 10 minutes. Not more.

If you each do that every day for one week, at the end of the week you’ll have filled up quite a lot of bags of rubbish and also a lot of things to be donated. That should make a great dent in the amount of clutter in your home – which in turn will make it easier to get the rest sorted.

Take this time to begin getting your home more organised. You’ll be very glad you did. I’m certain of it.
